If you are working for someone who would rather not pay you, then every time you are paid your employer will have been given cause to suffer. This is not an agreeable situation and you should take any steps possible to find an improved livelihood. Given that, ultimately no-one ever (no, rarely) wants to give money to others (which is the nature of State-money) then you should provide for yourself as far as possible.
Payment is protection money... Except to the extent that it is used to pay for something willingly such as when we pay to be entertained; with no resentment.
