A job is access to land

Wealth cannot be made alone... there is no such thing as a solitary wealth-creator. Wealth comes either from a combination of the individual and nature (as in farming) or it comes from trade. If we have (access to) land then we can grow a crop and harvest it on our own and in this sense we are creating wealth (from the land) on our own but in reality we are doing it not on our own but in combination with nature. In this situation we can think of ourselves as someone who is harvesting wealth from nature. The other kind of wealth acquisition comes from trade with other people. This is where we exchange something we have for something we value more. Most typically we exchange our labour for money or some other goods. In this situation it is the combination of the people working together which extracts wealth. Wealth comes from either trade with other people or farming the land. We cannot make wealth on our own (without land). To earn money we are either a farmer who extracts wealth from the land (directly) or we are paid to farm. All wealth eventually comes from the land so we are either farmers (who own the land) or we are paid to farm the land of other people. To be given a 'job' is to be given access to land which may be farmed. When we are given a job we are given access to land.
